Single: Catcase – A Ring

Catcase styles themselves as a “doom-pop band”, although the six-piece unit based out of Copenhagen takes a more jangle pop approach on their song “A Ring”, the second track from their upcoming debut album As It Reels (out 2/6/2026). The album stems from the aftermath of a breakup at the tail end of 2023, where vocalist/guitarist Lasse B. Beck poured feelings of loss, longing, selfishness, and fragile hope into words. On As It Reels, Beck doesn’t seek to provide answers to pain, but to reflect “the listener’s darkest moments and most hidden victories.”

As far as dark moments go, “A Ring” channels the souring of the search for love, starting with hope at the beginning of the night and turning into bitterness and confusion at the end. The vocals of Beck and Josephine Alicia trade off and duet, growing more biting and charged toward the end of the song, where the jangle pop swells to a rush of strings and snarling. It has a feel like The Verlaines, The Bats, The Chills, or any band that combines shiny guitars with sullen moods.

As It Reels, as a whole, acts as a celebration of the past half-century of alt-pop, from which Beck and the rest of Catcase took inspiration when honing their sound. Taking bits from jangle pop, dream pop, and post-punk, and from their experience with former bands in the Danish scene, Catcase has crafted a worthy collection of songs to make a new mark on alternative music. Take a listen to “A Ring” below.
