Returning from a handful of weeks where writing seemed planets away has been a breath of fresh air for me. After hearing just a short clip of this song from Caleb Nichols, I had one thought dominating my consciousness: “What a way to get back into the swing of things!”
As a California native, Nichols continues to make his mark on the DIY scene through more than just music. Nichols also happens to be a published poet and writer, his works appearing in a variety of literary journals, proving himself to be a maestro of the written and spoken word.
Released earlier this month, Awooo! is a FUN and almost grungy indie track with a bassline that drives the train down the tracks in style. To quote the artist submission, Awooo! is a “…culmination of my PhD work on queer ecopoetics…The lyrics, though, are actually a pop distillation of a lot of the theory I was reading— Morton’s Dark Ecology, Braidotti’s Post-human Feminism, as examples, and I swear, if you squint (with your ears?) you can maybe hear glimpses of that.”
The song was actually recorded in one take, with the intention of it being somewhat of a “throwaway” track. Boy, am I glad this one missed the dumpster! This was such a groovy treat to listen to after my much-needed break.
