It’s good to sometimes step out of your comfort zone, and that’s precisely what I did with Bloody Run’s ‘Lay Low’. For a die-hard indie-rock fan, I’m not afraid to admit that metal might be for me if it all sounds like Bloody Run.
The thunderous intro chucks you straight into the song; it’s loud, it’s cathartic, and it’s everything that we need right now. The roaring drums set the scene before the wailing guitars come rushing in, building the angry foundations that the song rests on.
It’s an interesting mix of genres with elements of shoegaze being thrown in, the slightly hazy vocals before turning into screams, and the way the drums slow down during certain parts. For what it’s worth, the band is talented at what they do, and you can tell that they enjoy it, which is always enjoyable to listen to.
The choruses are as energetic as the start, with the cluster of instruments working well together (especially the thrumming bass). However, my only qualm with the whole track is that it’s sometimes hard to work out what’s actually being sung. Although I suppose that’s just the nature of metal…
With striking lyrics like “love becomes our bane / falling short, visions become unclear, you just can’t help but fall in love with ‘Lay Low’.
Coming from their debut EP ‘Side A’, it’s impressive what the Detroit band is already achieving, and I, for one, can’t wait to see where they go next.
