Bay area music scene mainstay Peter Wallner, known for his work with Deafheaven and as a member of Wax Idols, returns with his newest project, Bliss Abyss. Formed during the pandemic as a synth-pop experiment, the band blends the hazy, ethereal texture of early ‘90s shoegaze and the energetic pop-punk vocals of the 2000s, bringing to mind memories of the nasal, impassioned delivery of Blink-182’s Tom Delonge and Weezer’s classic Blue Album.
The three piece outfit’s newest single, “wrecked”, is the heaviest track of the three released so far in the run-up to the band’s inevitable album release. The song opens with a grungy, driven guitar riff that only builds as Wallner’s vocals come in. Both drop out as quickly as they came in, though, as they make way for a sweet guitar line and a distorted melody that oozes style and character. The track closes with that same pop-punk instrumental, fading out with the familiar crackle and buzz of the electric guitar.
If their earlier singles hinted at the band’s shoegaze tendencies, “Wrecked” shows that Bliss Abyss can also put down some kick-ass drum and guitar headbangers, and I’ll be here for whatever Wallner and the band come out with next. Check out “wrecked” and follow Bliss Abyss on their socials below.
