Alexei Shishkin’s new single, “Ode to Carl Dennis,” taken from his soon-to-be-released album “Good Times,” is a charming little gem of a song. Inspired by the poet Carl Dennis and his poem “At Home With Cézanne,” where he has taken the characters and re-imagined them in a parallel universe, resulting in this beautifully crafted, melodically understated, poetically rooted and full of subtle depth piece of art.
Starting simple with a little guitar before the drums and organ kick in. The organ drives the song forward with its simple yet effective pulse.
There’s a warmth woven into its textures with a gentle pace and emotional core, feeling like a familiar friend. I felt like I knew this song by the time I’d finished my first listen and dived straight back in for another listen. I just wanted to know it better. (I just hope it doesn’t phone because I won’t answer!)
