Air Mail is the moniker of Midwest-born artist Niko Francis, and “Wide Awake (a.m.)” is his debut single. The Niko also explained the story behind the project’s name, which comes from writing letters to loved ones while away from home doing seasonal farm work.” The artist also shared with us that the song was written earlier this year after reading the news about Gaza and the L.A. fires.”
The press release should focus more on the music, explaining its narrative or inspiration:
Blending the offbeat intimacy of Alex G and the understated poignancy of MJ Lenderman, Francis delivers lo-fi folk that lingers for its melody as much as its message. “Because we, we are wide awake,” he sings—a line that lands like both a question and a mantra, reminding us of the fragile clarity that comes in moments of uncertainty.
Nikos has also been making music with a project called A-Go-Go, which has gained some recognition. This is his solo project with “a gift for turning introspection into something deeply connective.”
The press release has been describing so many interesting facts about the artist or the song that I felt an urge to share them in full. This intimate bedroom folk indie pop will not only capture your attention through its simplicity, but also with striking vocals and lyrics that will make you pause whatever you are doing and take a closer, more careful listen.
Simple repeating beats and captivating guitar riffs make the song beautiful. To be honest, this beat style generally doesn’t work for me, but in this song, it was just fine. The folky, sometimes alt-country guitar was outstanding, and some instrumental sections were superb. Especially in the second part of the song, the beautiful guitar sound will just mesmerize you.
I’ve been listening to this bedroom folk-pop song on repeat for the past couple of minutes and have been getting lost in the beautiful melody. There is mist outside, the cold November weather is here, and it cannot get more autumnal than this. The song has been fitting for a day like this, when you are longing for the workday to be over, just for a sign of relief and to be able to rest after a long workweek.
