EP: Nymphlord – Rough Blue Blanket

Nymphlord is an artist from Los Angeles, California and ‘Rough Blue Blanket’ is her new EP.

The description on Bandcamp reads: “muffled screams and an acoustic guitars”.

But it’s much more than that! I would say the general vibe of her sound is “indie” (whatever that means at the end of the day!), with the band sound one would expect (guitars, drums and bass). There is a whole tapestry of sounds added on top of that base, including drones, samples, vocals run through a vocoder, autotune, or talkbox, as well as creatively processed sounds from the rock instruments.

There is definitely a pop aesthetic here that makes this music very user-friendly to a more mainstream audience.

Her voice is soft and expressive, relatively high-pitched and girly, but without the annoying whispering and/or lack of articulation that has been a thing in pop music for so long!

‘Mrs Shagory’s Home Ec’ is my absolute favourite of the EP. It sounds like Aerosmith had a baby with How To Destroy Angels, and they hired a very young pop singer to sing the lines. Absolutely brilliant songwriting, arrangement and mixing/production, very creative and very musical. I also like ‘Blood and Potions’ very very much.

The EP begins with a more ‘expected’ indie sound. It takes you on a short but delightful journey, introducing more and more elements in the music, showing you that this is not your average singer-songwriter!
