Brother Language – the musical project of Brooklyn’s Matt Bell are back after a short hiatus with new single ‘Crew’.
The song begins with a few seconds of just enjoying the instrumental. You could close your eyes and imagine yourself on an empty highway, driving at dusk. Your mind is settled, and you’ve chosen to be happy regardless of how your day went.
The lyrics delve into the dynamics of friendship. The singer describes the adventures he’s been on with his friends, and how those moments defined their relationship. He then expresses the importance of intimacy in friendship as the foundation for loyalty. They know themselves more than anyone else; they aren’t perfect, He acknowledged. The walls did come up, but they still found their way to each other.
This song speaks well about the highs and lows of a platonic relationship. Having people you chose to be your brethren is a special kind of bond that can’t be broken with ease.
The vocal layering and modulation at the bridge of ‘Crew’ is very interesting. I appreciated the song a whole lot more just because of that creative choice. I got lost in its soulful, deep beauty. I think you will too.
