Single: Horsetail – Big Desert

“Big Desert” wears its heartbreak like a cowboy hat, calm and composed on the surface, aching underneath, with a hook built to live in your head for days.

Horsetail comes out of Austin with a sound built on country-western roots wired up with something grittier, and “Big Desert” fits right into the themes running through their upcoming debut, “Oil Rig,” love, loss, and the messier parts of living through it. The song was born from a conversation with a friend after a breakup, and that feeling shows in every line.

It opens calmly, just a steady beat, clean country guitars, and simple, rich drums laying the foundation. The vocals come in low and composed, full of that masculine, cowboy kind of cool, while the backup vocals color the chorus with an intimate, bluer shade. Then a hooky guitar line slips in with a rhythm that’s nearly impossible to forget, while the drums do their job well, driving it forward and pulling back exactly when the song needs room to breathe.

“She’s learning down in Texas that our hearts break every day, who could have a preference? You are broken either way” captures that resigned, heartbroken ache running through the whole song, delivered in a voice that sounds genuinely wounded.

The outro is where it really opens up; the song steps back and lets the instrumentals take over for a moment, with euphoric melodies and a light saxophone drifting in for a moment of pure release before closing out.

“Big Desert” is a song that lingers, both in feeling and in melody.
