Nostalgic, cute, and warm, the new tune from Ridgewood, NY-based anti-folk outfit – captained by songwriter Sheila Flaherty – is a breath of fresh air.
An ode to platonic love and the importance of and our dependence on those close relationships, it is an earnest look at the relationship between Sheila and her “bestie”.
The bestie in question is named Erin and – just like the song that was written in her honour – we’re told she is full of joy and levity, even in moments where it’s hard to be so, the proverbial flickering light in the enveloping dark.
Separated only by the small matter of a Montauk highway, the two have grown up together and have lived a lifetime of ups and downs. This tune acts as a tribute to their lifelong bond, chronicling many and varied escapades, from killing bottles of gin, to witnessing faceplants, via doing drugs, boogying down at the disco, and trips to jail.
The two have made a promise to each other to meet at the traffic lights in this life and indeed the next. Arguably a little morbid but also unquestionably sweet, this level of dedication, commitment, and love could only be heartening.
Musically, this seems to live in a similar ballpark to acts like First Aid Kit, Devendra Banhart, and Kimya Dawson. Full of quaint, quirky charm, there’s no resisting At The Light. Drink it in.
