Single: Heavy Water – Never Be A Saint

Solid pop-punk from the Texas panhandle, Heavy Water’s Mitch Rambo reflects on the importance of staying humble.

Mitch Rambo lives in Lubbock, Texas, has taught music lessons for over twenty years, and seems like your regular down-to-earth guy. Then he drops songs like “Never Be A Saint”, a track from his band Heavy Water’s latest EP Sundown. Another lesson from the indie rock world that one must never judge a book – or album, in this case – by its cover.

Rambo and Heavy Water have four releases under their belt, with their self-titled first EP coming out in 2021. They’ve kept their activities close to the Lubbock area – the home of Buddy Holly, by the way – but their sound carries far beyond the Texas panhandle in terms of its intensity. Heavy Water has a pretty solid pop-punk sound with a nice blend of vocal harmony in places through Sundown; on “Never Be A Saint”, that pops up effectively in the chorus.

On the track, Rambo sings of the mental toll of reflecting on flaws, running through all the intrusive thoughts that might bring a person down: “I’m a cheater, I’m a fake / I’m a liar, got shit for brains / Well, I make promises that always intend to break.” But in the chorus, Rambo accepts his station in life: “God knows that I have never been first-rate / God knows that I will never be a saint.”

The new track from Heavy Water acts as a reminder that good music can come from everyone everywhere: You, your friends, your guitar teacher, and so on. We all share the same woes, the same fears, the same thoughts running through our heads. God knows most of us will never be saints, and the ones who become saints probably won’t make a big deal about it.
