If there is any justice at all, April June’s “Starstruck” would be a catalyst for music finally being romantic again. From the softness to the glowing dream of a slow dance, we could really use music that just sounds like the rapture of being in love again. “Starstruck” might be such a song to add to your lover’s mixtape.
Then, there is a darkness found in baby’s out of luck again. Rather, there is a self-delusion of darkness adding something adventurous within a relationship. The charm of April June’s EP can best be tackled as a few songs washed in a daydream. Songs that are lucky to leave her head with the melancholia and/or the light-hearted romance intact. Be it the song about being on love with a distant man in a horrible relationship (“pretty like a rockstar”) or taking the blame for kicking the relationship off in the first place (“all my fault”), this EP is a six-song dissertation on what it is like to just be in deep love, for better or for worse.
