Singles: Mary & Adelaide – Collared & Hoodie zipper

Mary & Adelaide is a “suburban post-core four piece” from Oshawa, Ontario that, according to the band bio, “wear all the influences on their cut-off sleeves; everything from wrestling stars, vintage shop finds, films on VHS, 24-hour news feeds, big screen gaming, and all night chasing white rabbits down holes of music.”

I really enjoyed the band’s bio, and there is one more quote I wanted to share from it:

“The world is flattening, it’s an everything at once, all and nothing world, and it’s the world Mary & Adelaide sing to and about. Bowie had a lifetime to express all the ch-h-h-h-anges those children were going through, this generation has four minutes, maybe less. Tik tok! Tik tok! Tik tok! Swipe!”

This new indie emo pop song is about getting older (something we all can relate to) and being scared of losing the things that make you unique (another theme that I can personally relate to). This is also their second single from their upcoming first full-length release. As the press has mentioned, the band is blending elements of emo and indie rock, incorporating acoustic guitars, thoughtful lyrics, and beautiful melodies. They have also claimed in it that they write love songs.

I love it when the accompanying information is rich with little nuances that make the listening experience amplified. Still, usually for me personally, it works like a cherry on top. I always care about the music itself, and I have been thinking about what draws me into this one. Even after 10th listen, I am still not sure. Catchy guitar riffs, emo-ish vocals infused with indie rock. The angsty feel of the song or the reflective lyrics could be interesting. I’m not sure, and even five more listens will not make it clear to me, but I want to hit play again and again. I want to learn the lyrics (bummer, they did not share them on Bandcamp) and just sing along.

I imagine this song being the one that is played in the middle of the set. Everyone knows it and wants to sing along, and I could see myself standing in the middle of the crowd and singing it with everyone. The song has such an excellent quality that I have not heard in recent weeks. I have been listening to a lot of music, hundreds of songs, but this one is definitely one of the best I have heard this summer.

I have also decided to share the single ‘Hoodie zipper’, which was released back in August. It is a little more acoustic, but once again, there is a part that everyone will want to sing along to.

oh my god
lifes so hard
staring through my hoodie zipper

oh my god
lifes so hard
I could leave it if I wanted

This band is something I needed to discover, and I am so happy about it. I cannot wait for the new album to be released, and if the songs are as good as these, I am sure I will love it. Mary & Adelaide, you have a new big fan in Slovakia, and I hope more people will get into your music as much as I did just now.
