I’m thrilled to share an incredible new discovery from Mexico: a band called Cortamuela. They are delving into the captivating sounds of shoegaze and post-hardcore, blending these genres with a unique twist inspired by the raw energy of grunge. So far, they have released two compelling singles that showcase their artistic vision and musical exploration.
These tracks not only highlight their ability to create atmospheric soundscapes typical of shoegaze but also feature the intense emotional depth characteristic of post-hardcore. In the process, Cortamuela is bringing a fresh perspective to the music scene by integrating influences from grunge, resulting in a sound that’s both nostalgic and innovative.
Here are two quotes that offer insight into the essence of their singles:
The Moon Knows:
“First song we composed as a band, and a definite crowd favorite. Meshes together similar experiences of abuse at the hands of a loved one and a subsequent lament directed at the moon.”
Anhedonia:
“A song that’s died in as many hands as it has been born. Our first incursion into our self described “Grungegaze” sound.”
The songs from this band lean towards heavier genres, yet they are infused with a vibrant raw energy that resonates with me deeply. There’s something exhilarating about discovering new music scenes, especially when they come from places that are often overlooked, like Latin America. This region is brimming with talented artists, and I genuinely hope that more of them will begin to reach out and share their work with the broader audience.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed these new tracks; they represent an impressive debut for this band and showcase their potential. It feels promising to witness the early stages of their journey, and I’m excited to see where they go from here. This experience aligns perfectly with my personal goal of expanding my musical horizons by exploring different genres and diving deeper into the “harder” spheres of music. Overall, these new songs have not only captivated me but also motivated me to continue my exploration of diverse sounds and styles.
