Single: Yasu Cub – willow tree

“willow tree” sways slow and steady , built on dreamy guitars and vocals that feel like they’re half asleep in the best way.

Yasu Cub splits its identity between Tokyo and Seattle, and that in-between feeling runs straight through “willow tree.” Led by Jacob Oki Ahearn, the project draws from Pacific Northwest indie folk and alt-country as easily as it does Tokyo’s dream pop and shoegaze scenes, and this single, inspired by a willow tree in Shinjuku Gyoen Park, leans fully into its calmer, more sunlit side.

The song stays simple throughout, single-coil guitars chiming gently, brushed drums keeping a relaxed 6/8 sway, nothing rushing or overreaching. The vocals drift somewhere between sung and hummed, carrying their own loose rhythm, repeating a few quiet lines rather than building toward anything dramatic.

“Falling on a daydream, knocking out my brains so I don’t feel a thing, someone come and save me” sums up that hazy, half-numb feeling the song sits in, simple words doing just enough.

What makes the “willow tree” stamp is how little it does; the simplicity speaks volumes. Just dreamy guitars and vocals, with drums that stay out of the way, it’s a song built entirely on restraint, and that restraint is exactly the point.
