Single: Wedgy – The Realm

Leeds-based band Wedgy have not existed in its current form for very long. ‘The Realm’ is their first release as a 5-piece, and is the second single from their upcoming EP.

The intro gave me epic 80’s band vibes that I couldn’t quite put my finger on – perhaps Simple Minds or U2?! That delicate chime-like guitar melody – those wide FX. I absolutely loved that atmospheric start.

Things explode into a wall of sound with a slightly psychedelic, stoner vibe. A rolling, distorted melodic bass. Drums splashing and crashing around us. Guitars strumming subtly in the background. It’s a wonderfully powerful, rolling groove.

The vocal tone & that anguished scream put me in mind of classic Jim Morrison – but wait – this is where comparisons must end – this is a really stylish, modern track with its own distinct character.

All of a sudden, the track turns on a dime with a spoken word breakdown…before resuming the power chords and stadium-like grandeur.

I loved the simplicity of the main hook and chords. It’s an understated foundation which produces an immense, thundering sound – and it allows the vocal and lead guitar to weave in and out, working their magic with tons of groove and a heart full of blues.

Things are left to breathe and simmer for the final third of the track, and the ethereal, piercing guitar notes soar once again, before gently floating back down to earth.

‘The Realm’ is out now, and you can catch Wedgy at their upcoming gigs at The Finsbury, London (1st Nov), and Headrow House, Leeds (28th Nov).
