The lead single from Swedish singer/songwriter Victoria Skoglund’s forthcoming debut full-length album (entitled Unravel Time), Not Impossible, is, according to the artist, a “song about light, loss and connection”.
Recorded and released under the artist pseudonym Viic Woods, her new single is an emotive journey, propelled constantly by thunderous drums, choppy, trebly indie guitars and a tight bassline. The star of the show, though, is the vocal. Rooted in emotion, speculation, hope and desperation in varying measures, Woods conjures images with words – in a fashion not too dissimilar to cult favourite Laura Veirs – as the simple chorus (which was the initial spark that lit the fire of the song) elevates the whole thing to another plane.
With a sound that would fit in just as nicely alongside current stars such as Mannequin Flowers or fellow Swede’s Washing Machina, as well as older acts like Mazzy Star and Cocteau Twins, Viic Woods is in very good company indeed.
