In 2023, Italian dreamgaze trio ultrasaturated released their debut EP “Universal Hologram”, a beautiful five-track showcase of opalescent, blissful dream pop, awash with radiant guitar work and an air of nostalgia. The follow-up, “Feral Spring”, is arriving later in the summer, and if lead track “New Love” is anything to go by, it couldn’t have come at a better time.
Taking cues from DIIV and Beach Fossils, “New Love” is enveloped in a gorgeous haze from the beginning. There’s more than a scent of coldwave in the melancholy-sounding rhythm section, but when you add in the pastel-toned guitars and astral synth line which punctuates the track, everything comes together in a dreamlike whole that feels like being totally immersed in sunlight.
The vocals melt into the background deliciously, and the lyrics weave a hopeful tale of chasing dreams and being captured by love. It’s a song with few words but plenty to say; you can tell this is a band brimming with confidence in their identity and sound.
These days, it feels like the winter blues are lasting longer than ever, but just a few plays of “New Love” and they’ll soon be banished back to where they came from.
