Single: Trainfantome – Here The Mermaids Play

WARNING! LISTEN AT YOUR OWN RISK! This siren call is as seductive as it is unsettling!

Offering a friendly hand to all those who exist outside the norm, French shoegaze-emo band TRAINFANTOME return with ‘Here The Mermaids Play’ – the first track from their forthcoming album (due early in 2026).

The band says their latest single is a true ‘ode to difference’ and is a love letter for the siren that slumbers within each of us.

An intriguing title for sure – the track has an intriguing start too, with a crunchy, lo-fi guitar and a dissonant, disjointed sound. With a vocal snippet that’s easy to miss, the band explodes into life, and everything ignites around us.

Melodies come thick and fast, layer upon layer, and the guitars go through different incarnations as the song evolves like some lab-created monster.

In the lighter sections, it’s melodic and airy. Olivier Le Tohic’s subtly phasing vocal delivers a wonderfully sultry melody. However, when things get gnarly, it’s a real banger, and the track rolls along with earth-shaking momentum.

Fake a smile
Complete denial
Trying to play it cool

It’s a towering sound that is, in turns, menacing and mesmerizing.

‘Here The Mermaids Play’ blends a modern sound with unmistakable retro sensibilities (FYI, the drummer on the track is Kellii Scott from veteran US rock band Failure). Trainfantome continues to forge a sound entirely their own, inhabiting a universe that is uniquely theirs – mermaids included!
