The BV’s were formed almost by accident by a German exchange student and his UK roommate recording demos for fun back in 2016. Nearly a decade and four albums later, that same bittersweet, looping sound still carries them, and “Safe And Sound” is evidence of why it’s worked for this long.
The song opens with dreamy, slightly distorted guitars and fast, simple drums that keep everything moving without overcomplicating things. Then the vocals arrive, and they’re the real centerpiece here, wrapped in so much reverb that it genuinely feels like you’re standing in some huge, empty space like a parking lot or a massive tunnel, that’s vast and quiet, which gives the song a surreal and eerie vibe. It’s fascinating that the vocals still sound clear and full despite all that space around them; the mix engineer deserves a lot of credit for bringing that genius to life.
Everything else stays tightly engineered too, drums, bass, and guitars all sitting exactly where they should. The song moves easily between its quieter and fuller moments with transitions so smooth you’d barely notice them happening.
your eyes are like microwaves
another smile makes confusion
hollow futures
situations
The lyrics feel just as surreal as the song itself. Describing someone’s eyes as microwaves is a strange and uncomfortable image, something warm turned into something that radiates and unsettles you, paired with a smile that only adds confusion. The lyrics paint an abstract picture of a relationship that feels disorienting, less about genuine connection and more about being caught in someone’s orbit without fully understanding why.
“Safe And Sound” leaves you in a strange but peaceful place, where the music does more talking than the words ever could.
