Single: Sweet Nobody – I Don’t Know When I’ll See You Again

If you enjoy soft and dreamy indie pop, Sweet Nobody’s “I Don’t Know When I’ll See You Again” could be right up your alley. Based in Long Beach, California, the four-piece band is most known for their 2017 song “Manner Of Speaking”, which became the theme song for YouTube Red’s Youth & Consequences. “I Don’t Know When I’ll See You Again”, released September 30th, is the first single from their upcoming album “Driving off to Nowhere”, out November 7th on Repeating Cloud.

The song starts with a somewhat nostalgic guitar melody and a calm beat, establishing the track’s atmosphere from the start. With a sound reminiscent of Alvvays, the single features soft vocals with beautiful harmonies and adlibs, pretty synths, and a delightful little bell melody in the chorus. I love the details, especially the effects on the vocals, which sound a bit far-away and drive home the song’s theme of a distant future.

It’s impressive how my impression of the song changed just by paying attention to the lyrics. At first, it sounded hopeful, light, and optimistic, with a cute melody and calm beat. Once I understood its meaning, what I previously saw as a happy song took a bittersweet turn. It’s a beautiful song that has some hope, but it also has a sadness to it. The lyrics show longing for something indefinite, something you wish would happen and spend time thinking of, but you’re not sure it will happen anytime soon. It reflects the unfortunate reality of relationships and a loss of connection between people over time.

Sweet Nobody has a sound that is sweet and nostalgic, and they play to their strengths by mixing soft vocals with catchy melodies and powerful drums, all coming together to illustrate the message in the lyrics. “I Don’t Know When I’ll See You Again” was a solid release that definitely makes me excited for what else they might have in their upcoming album.
