Perennial optimist of the Philadelphia scene Sug Daniels explores new sonic—and ultimately emotional—depths in her latest single, “Black and Gifted (ambient version)”. More reprise than remix, this version strips the energetic original (from Daniels’ equally upbeat debut album I Believe In You) to its bare essence, creating an intimate and affecting experience familiar to Daniels’ live show regulars, but perhaps new to those acquainted primarily with her studio releases.
Daniels has built a presence in the Philadelphia music scene around her live performances, which are by turns intimate and kinetic, but consistently engaging. The Delaware-born songwriter/producer has spent years on the road with The Black Opry, supported acts such as The Indigo Girls and Molly Tuttle, and even showcased at SXSW in 2022. Daniels’ studio work predominantly lies at the intersection of folk, soul, and rock, but she’s often at her best when pushing her own boundaries and experimenting outside of that zone.
And Daniels is certainly at her best in this release, which veers heavily into ambient/dream-pop territory and simultaneously showcases both her vocal abilities and her talent for subtle yet effective production techniques. Each phrase dissipates into a rich and gentle wash of reverb, exposing a vulnerability that transforms what was previously confident and hopeful in the original “Black and Gifted” into a more somber and defiant expression, as if the song itself had lived through the past year in America right alongside the rest of us, emerging bruised and worn, but ultimately stronger than before.
Through this lens, every detail feels poignant and deliberate—right down to the soothing sounds peppered into the track as Daniels attempts to convey comfort and reassurance to her listeners, and possibly to herself. The end result is a deeply personal track well worth checking out.
