Single: Stinkus – only when it comes to you, i guess

Stinkus, aka Tyler Thompson, is a prolific song writer & producer from California. We’ve covered plenty of music from Stinkus before, and ‘only when it comes to you, i guess’ is the latest single (to be followed later in the year by his second album).

Static and a distant film quote (taken from 2010’s “Lottery Ticket” in case you were wondering), give way to a slightly lo-fi sound, and it feels like we’ve stumbled across a cool radio station at the end of the dial.

There’s a nice mix of electronic and acoustic. It’s a warm, tactile sound, and the track successfully blends elements of trip-hop, with bedroom indie.

A prominent downtempo drum loop is the backbone of the track and the crunchy, shuffling beat compliments the various guitars and vocals perfectly.

The vocal melody is a simple, haunting hook. A repeating motif that morphs from a chant into a gentler, sung part.

It’s one melodic line repeated over and over for most of the song – but it’s really effective and never feels repetitive, as layers and variations are cleverly added as the song builds and builds. It starts to feel like a jam where the groove is so satisfying – so hypnotic – it gets into the soul and is hard to let go.

Subtle vocal harmonies become more prominent, the film quotes are brought back to close the track, and it feels like we are returning to surf that radio dial for the next atmospheric soundscape.
