Single: Sorry Sweetheart – Touch Grass

Denver’s Sorry Sweetheart has been playing the local Colorado ska and punk scene for almost a decade now, and has a couple of EPs and a handful of singles to show for it- but after nearly 10 years, they are finally releasing their first full-length album on February 27th on Bad Time Records. Touch Grass is the second pre-release single for the upcoming album, titled “Warm Room, Good Friends”- a lyric taken from this song.

Touch Grass has heavy pop punk and emo influences with the addition of solid horns. The song deals with the difficulties of surviving and thriving in the world. Not being able to afford to go out with friends and struggling to make ends meet, scrolling social media, and just hoping to be able to have enough left over to enjoy something. While a lot of the early beats in the song feel more pop punk, the anger and repetition of some lines later in the song feel more emo as the frustration builds. “Getting a little is heaven-sent, and getting a little is hard god damn” is, unfortunately, more relatable than I’d like to admit.

Lyrics about watching Bleach, falling asleep, watching your friends have fun on social media, while you can’t afford to go outside and touch grass, have defined more of my time than I’d like to admit. In fact, there is a concert across town I’d like to be at right now with some bands I’d love to see, but my car won’t start, and I don’t have $20 to spend on a concert when I need to get a new starter.

Instead, I’m in my room, listening to the horns as they lay over the verses. I close my eyes, and I watch the world spin. I fall down dizzy, try again. I have a warm room and good friends. And getting a little is hard, god damn!

At least I have this, and Sorry Sweetheart let’s me know I’m not alone. Gods, I need to touch the grass- or at least put on an episode of Bleach.
