I’m flying high off the last few releases from some of my favorite artists, so when I saw a new single release from SLEEP CLUB, I knew it was the perfect time to jump on it. People On TV was released about a week ago under Two Bedroom Records, and it’s been on repeat through my headphones for at least 3 or 4 of those days.
SLEEP CLUB is spearheaded by Matt Jones, originally a hub for dream pop/indie pop ideas that didn’t fit with his other project (The High Lines). Today, SLEEP CLUB is more of a unique shoegaze project, with heavier music on the near horizon.
To give more backstory on this song, I want to quote the artist’s submission, “People On TV is one of my oldest song ideas that pre-dates this project. Despite being a relatively simple song, it’s taken me nearly 20 iterations to find the right mixing feel.” At first, I was shocked by the number of iterations the single had before its final form, but this is a common occurrence for many talented artists. Either way, I love how People On TV turned out, so SLEEP CLUB knows EXACTLY what they’re doing (of course they do).
I can’t express how velvety smooth the vocals are on this track; it has massively raised the bar in terms of shoegaze projects. The melodic guitar is like drizzling sweet honey on your brain, while the vocal patterns keep you locked in what feels like a dream. The end of this track feels heavier than the rest and (in my opinion) gives us a taste of what’s to come from SLEEP CLUB.
If you ask me, shoegaze is one of the few superior genres, and SLEEP CLUB just drives that opinion home. Stream People On TV now on all platforms and enjoy the sweet 3-minute dream that SLEEP CLUB gifts us during playtime.
