Bedroom songwriter and home studio vibes are strong and up front on sam hirst’s new single, Little Thief. (And yes, he likes to violate punctuation rules for his name, so lowercase it is!)
Pleasingly, sam brings a welcome upbeat approach that contrasts with some of the more well-known indie bedroom room Debbie Downers. While his guitars and bass bounce around like kids chasing a Fog City trolley up and down those hills, there’s a little hiss seeping out of his amp that warms up the mixture of cynicism, practicality, and matter-of-factness that lyrically smack you in the face, all while giving the song layers of playfulness and doom-seeking.
The gold medal lyrics of Little Thief are “Mother Nature gets my goat / She just needs a neck to choke / So when she grabs me by the throat / I won’t be surprised.” The planned messiness of the outro instrumental accurately reflects the sentiment of the chorus: “I won’t help you escape / Sorry / You tried so hard to get out of your body / And look at what it’s done / You made a mess / Wave your arms around.”
The five-word description sam uses on Bandcamp is concise: “I sing and play music.” He delivers what’s on the tin, and I’m pleased that he does sing and play music. Little Thief is sam’s third single in the past half year or so, following a two-year break from releasing songs after his 2023 25-song marathon album. Could these three singles be leading toward a full-length album some time soon? Let’s hope so!
