Released all the way back in 2023, but somehow managing to escape our gaze until today, “Slow Decay” by Rose Haze has a hell of a lot going on.
The musical vehicle of Ohio-born, Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Kate Ramsey, on this song in particular she incorporates all sorts of sounds. Squelchy electronic elements to shoegazey dreampop and ethereal Coteau Twins-style vocals: All of them meld together perfectly to create something beguiling and intriguing.
It starts off feeling distinctly grungy with the sadly now-departed guitarist (and best friend) Ruben Gonzales carving through the rest of the sound with ease and grace. But in time, it blooms like a flower and reveals itself to be made up of a multitude of beautiful sonic colours. Bassist Yoko Miyakawa and drummer Dustin Coker hold it down – as all good rhythm sections do – while giving the guitarists space to paint and play.
It’s a track that craves – and deserves – your full attention.
With four albums under her belt but none since 2022, we’d say we’re overdue a new one. However, we understand the process of moving on and creating without the presence of Ruben must be extremely difficult. But, according to her Substack, new music is coming. We’ll look forward to hearing it.
In the meantime, take a listen to “Slow Decay” below:
