There are songs that dazzle, and there are songs that land quietly. The former relies on the spectacle of sharp hooks and pristine production, burning bright before fading away. “Pair,” the latest single from Florida’s Rainger (the solo project of Tanner Ward), is decidedly the latter. It’s simple, sleepy, and a little bit stoned: a work of unhurried weight that nonetheless makes a home in your mind. “Pair” fuses bedroom-pop chime with alt-country yearning into a song of soft longing and empty spaces, like an afternoon walk down a forest trail you used to share with someone else.
Ward wrote and recorded almost everything himself in single takes, with Wyatt Dronen contributing slide guitar, fiddle, and backing vocals. The production is smooth and dusty in equal measure—rough at the edges but brimming with vivid warmth at its core, as a Polaroid left on the dashboard. Ward’s vocal delivery has the intimate presence of a cigarette shared on the porch. He’s confiding as much as he’s performing.
The arrangement expands and contracts around its central motif with a pleasant flow. Instrumental refrains stretch between the verses, letting the emotions breathe. There’s a touch of despair hiding behind the hopeful guitars and textural shimmer, surfacing most clearly in the gentle plea of the closing lines: “The months ahead will surely bother me a hair / But you and I will be a pair / Won’t we, my dear? / Won’t we, my dear?” In the end, it all fades away like a memory dissolving back into the present, leaving behind a pretty outro and a gratitude for the time you spent with it.
It’s nothing crazy, but it’s something good. Neither the voice nor the instrumentation dominates the stage, but they resonate as something honest and affecting, adding up to much more than the sum of the parts. Listen to “Pair” below:
