Single: Peter Patrick Pedro – Fool

A stunning fusion of lo-fi bedroom pop and indie folk.

Fool by Peter Patrick Pedro is a stunning fusion of lo-fi bedroom pop and indie folk.

Like a blend of Grady Philip Drugg, Monsters Of Folk, and Toledo (who, incidentally, were involved in both the recording and the production of this song), Fool gently sways and sidles into your subconscious. Ethereal synths subtly intertwine in the background, the acoustic finger-picked guitar rhythm is persistent, and the sharp snare snaps.

A classic love song at its core, the sentimentality is cute, if a little backhanded (“I’m a fool for falling for you”? – not exactly complementary), but the delivery is where it’s at. A crooning, country-tinged, laid-back timbre serves the song perfectly.

Syrupy and sweet – but not overly saccharine – lyrics like “take a breath, take my hand / let me be the man you think I am” perfectly convey the delicate blend of responsibility, anxiety, and elation that complete dedication to another fosters. Lines like “baby I know you are my / D-E-S-T-I-N-Y” belie a conviction that suggests the characters in the song will make it through. Whoever they might be.

Fool is taken from Peter Patrick Pedro’s full-length debut album – also produced by Toledo – Another July, which is out now.
