Opening with an acoustic guitar melody that is vaguely reminiscent of The Libertines’ modern classic What A Waster and a stomp/clap percussive component that is often rather maligned nowadays (although we think it works particularly well here), the new tune from Dystopian Novels is quietly punchy from the outset.
The aforementioned elements are joined by dreamy vocals, smooth bass, expertly utilised synths, and additional guitars layered in such a way that create something that ultimately feels like something larger than the sum of its individual parts.
Hailing from Cork, Ireland, Dystopian Novels (also known as Keiran Ring) has a surprising, almost Billy Corgan-esque quality to his voice in parts of the song. Lyrically, Roll Your Eyes is shrouded in mystery but feels rather romantic at its core. The chorus lyrics of “your point is made / come on, it’s late” remind us of many a night lost due to trying to be understood by our other half, at the expense of precious quality time that we should otherwise have been enjoying together.
The single has had support from Stephen Ashcroft on Amazing Radio and has also been featured by the legendary John Kennedy on Radio X, and it’s not at all hard to see why. The future looks bright.
