NYC-based three-piece Pespi (sic) has a new track out called “Stink”, a soulful rock song expressing the feelings of someone going through a heartbreak. The consistent beat at the beginning of the song sounds like it means to invoke a thoughtful state, as if you’re lying down after a busy day and letting go of your heavy mind.
There are a few pauses with the instruments that leave emphasis on certain words. This makes the song more enjoyable and allowed me to gauge the singer’s emotions. The singer seems to be wasted due to too much drinking. He hoped to dissolve his broken heart, but it seems that didn’t bring the result for which he’d hoped. He seems angry at his previous lover for being dishonest and for toying with him.
The words “I never saw that open door” are repeated twice, which I believe is very intentional. It may suggest that the singer’s partner was never as committed as he was. Hence, he never saw or even thought that there was a way out. He fell hopelessly in love that even after the breakup, he still could not see himself without his previous lover.
This song is definitely relatable to a lot of people who have felt betrayed but still can’t completely detach themselves from the other person. It’s not the easiest feeling to overcome. It really feels awful, or – as the title suggests – stinks.
