Single: Opah – Angry

Like a ghost in the night it serenely drifts from moment to moment.

Danish trio Opah describe their music as ‘experimental and playful’. Based on their minimal online presence and new single ‘Angry’, I think I would describe them as ‘enigmatic and brooding’.

A relatively new act, Opah’s second single ‘Angry’ opens with a wonderfully analogue, glitchy arp and a cinematic, drifting vocal.

Hannah Sommer’s voice has a crystal-clear tone – with just a hint of an accent – and the intermittent backing vocals bring a lush warmth to the track.

The track floats along with a melancholic melody as the fractured beat arrives, and – like a ghost in the night – it serenely drifts from moment to moment.

The atmosphere is brooding, the melody rises before descending into darkness, and things stay on this shadowy, hazy level throughout – meaning the tension is never quite released – and the drama keeps building.

The vocal delivery is calm – not angry – it feels resigned – perhaps defeated by what’s gone before. This contrast is reinforced when the heavily distorted guitars appear, tearing and scratching at the soothing strings and relaxed beat. It’s a clever juxtaposition.

“Why do I feel so angry
Why do I feel so mad
Because the world today feels sad”

There are no fireworks or special effects in ‘Angry’ – just a weighty, mature, musical sound that proves sometimes the most powerful way to be angry is not to sound angry at all.
