Formed in Redding, California, Not Your Babe makes a bold first impression with their upcoming single Somebody Died, a track that’s equal parts danceable and devastating, pairing punk energy with confessional lyricism. It’s raw, cathartic, and deeply human, the kind of song that makes you want to move while it breaks your heart.
The project is the brainchild of singer-songwriter Cam Tyler, who spent the past decade fronting the indie-punk outfit Needle Beach while also honing a more vulnerable side through acoustic sets around town. In 2024, Tyler released their first solo EP, Mayfly, a release that sparked a new vision: to form a band that could marry punk’s urgency with the intimacy of stripped-down songwriting. To bring that idea to life, Tyler turned to longtime friends Preston Faires (drums), Dan Wait (bass), and Zach Zeller (guitar). The chemistry was immediate, and Not Your Babe was born.
Together, the four-piece crafts songs that wrestle with the chaos and beauty of being human: shifting relationships, clinging to hope, and finding reasons to dance even in the darkest moments. Their music is at once vulnerable and explosive, carried by heartfelt lyrics wrapped in a punchy, infectious sound.
If you’re into bands that blur the line between raw punk energy and brutally honest indie songwriting, Not Your Babe will fit right into your playlists. Think the scrappy charm of Diet Cig or The Front Bottoms, but with the emotional punch of Phoebe Bridgers or Julien Baker. There’s also a bit of that Soccer Mommy/Snail Mail/Beach Bunny vibe, songs that make you want to dance while also kind of breaking your heart. And if you love how Japanese Breakfast or The Beths can turn melancholy into something euphoric, you’ll get the same rush here. Basically, if you’ve ever screamed along to Mitski or drifted away with Big Thief, Not Your Babe might just become your new obsession.
Currently tearing up stages across Northern California and putting the finishing touches on their debut album, Not Your Babe is just getting started. If Somebody Died is any indication, they’re a band to watch closely, bringing honesty, energy, and a spark of defiance to every note. It’ll be out on October 1st.
