As the Seattle-based band’s first single of the year, ‘Stretch’ demonstrates the growth of No Floor, as the promising new face of gloomy shoegaze.
Where previous releases, ‘Keep Time’ and ‘Dust’, focussed on the band’s propensity for overpowering walls of noise; harsh waves of breaking glass; and almost shrill soundscapes; on ‘Stretch’, things are a little different. No Floor has put the fire on, warming up their sound to sound somewhere between early, DIIV and Real Estate. It is definitely a more relaxed listen, but still the glorious gloom lingers: the band themselves describe it as; “a song that explores life’s mundane moments and decisions, intertwined with feelings of apathy, self-doubt, and missed opportunities”.
What makes, No Floor a unique band amidst the sea of endlessly multiplying dream-pop/shoegaze adjacent bands, is their commitment to finding their own voice within the genre. Already, the Seattle four-piece are subverting expectations of what they are going to sound like with each release: because of this, they are absolutely a band worth getting behind.
