The new track from Southern California’s rock n roll maverick The Lonely Suns is a sneaky preview and a promise of what’s to come from him later this summer. Where his previously released track (the wonderfully loose and free-spirited “Impulsive Breathing“) was an exercise in artistic impulsivity and creative expression, this new track is a tense burst of frustrated energy and kinetic rage. Released in response to the recent horrible fascist occurrences in his home City, Watch The City Burn is a 2 and a half minute garage punk romp that puts the establishment on notice. “Take that flag of yours and stick it where my sun won’t shine”, indeed.
The B-side to the single is a cover of the 1946 Merle Travis classic, “Sixteen Tons,” although The Lonely Suns’ version is more in line with Tennessee Ernie Ford’s. A ballad about dedicating your life to thankless work for faceless corporations, this old cautionary tale seems more relevant today than ever before.
The artist and his label – Black Rainbow Collective – have compiled a Spotify playlist entitled ¡Viva la revolución!– of local artists, big and small – to represent and stand beside the diverse, beautiful and beloved members of The Golden State.
An album will follow soon. Keep em peeled.
