Nixon Boyd’s new single, “You Will Always Get Away With It,” packages a well-honed pop sensibility in an easygoing and midtempo tune about friendship and forgiveness. The style and sound bring artists like Andy Shauf and Coconut Records to mind, but Boyd crafts a unique melody all his own, one that burrows into the psyche with razor-sharp melodic hooks.

The song nearly disappeared forever when the laptop on which it lived was stolen from his car. Rather than give up on the project, however, Boyd built the track back up from scratch, producing an earworm that should satisfy just about any listener.

On first listen, the song might even seem to address the thief directly. He sings, “I’ve given you every chance/ to give back what is mine/ And if you’re betting/ I’ll just let it go in time.” While this layer of meaning rings true, Boyd insists that the song “at its core is this little back-handed love song about how friendship is a journey.” The lyrics, then, reveal a reflection on the long arc of life’s relationships, especially with the people who are closest to us, the ones who choose to stick around.

The vocal layering and harmonies pay homage to musicians like Elliott Smith, but the song never quite gets that dark or vulnerable. Instead, it feels like a love song that moves beyond the trappings of the genre. Rather than explore the heightened feelings and attractions of early relationships, Boyd would appear to be much more interested in the mercies that bring people together over time.

This is a well-crafted tune that feels wise beyond its years, one that you can (and should) access through the link below.
