Since releasing his debut album Metaphysical Change in 2022, Nate Bergman has kept busy. He’s put out a handful of EPs and singles, each full of his signature alt-country flavor and his voice, which – in his words – sounds like Sam Cooke after 400 cigarettes.
Bergman’s latest single, “Long Black Hearse”, stems from the same dark place that inspires all of the Nashville-by-way-of-DC songwriter’s music. But on this track, Bergman teamed up with Seattle’s own Noah Gundersen, an indie-folk artist who has opened for artists such as Emmylou Harris, Beck, and Josh Ritter, and whose music has appeared on TV (Station 19, The Good Doctor, Sons of Anarchy).
The double dose of songwriting talent lends itself to “Long Black Hearse”, a melancholy but soulful song about how everything feels like a winding ride to the end, with both good things and bad simply acting as signposts and mile markers towards life’s final destination. The individual vocals of Bergman and Gundersen are gorgeous, but they harmonize beautifully during the choruses as well.
While the recording is quietly powerful, the song sounds just as chilling live. Bergman and Gundersen performed “Long Black Hearse” together in Ohio this past November. Take a look: Even with the rough cell phone audio, you can tell the audience is so locked in, you could hear a pin drop.
“Long Black Hearse” is just another track among the many Bergman has in the can; follow him on Instagram for updates about what’s coming down the line. And check out Noah Gundersen’s feed as well to learn what he’s got coming up next.
