Beginning by sounding like Vampire Weekend covering a post-punk song before rapidly evolving into a combination of a softer version of Art Brut and a more docile Los Campesinos!, the new tune from Croydon-based group My Best Unbeaten Brother is quite the oxymoronic prospect. It is at the same time upbeat and lively but feels, simultaneously, rather depressive.
By the time the chorus comes in, it seems like some more influences are shining through the mesh of sound. Bright Eyes, Swearing At Motorists, Cursive, and Death Cab For Cutie blend together to make a delicious emo soup, and My Best Unbeaten Brother slurps it all up.
There are moments that also remind us of The National in their early years. It’s the unique combination of what feels like despondency or disenchantment – but also a sense of hope – existing in the same space at the same time.
