“I get scared every time / I think of the time / we won’t have the time / to just pass the time / saying nothing at all / and laughing at all / the stupid things we do”
The new tune from Croydon trio My Best Unbeaten Brother is a delicate blend of existential dread, whimsical what-ifs, and an ode to mundane contentment.
There are things, moments, that make us and that bind us to each other. Often shared with mates, these moments can be accompanied by shit films, good music, absent-minded activities, and general nothingness.
It’s these vacuous but decidedly delightful glimmers that give us things to look forward to, and that help us power through the struggle and mundanity of everyday life. The ability to decompress in harmony with those that you can be the most honest version of yourself around is a balm for the souls of the tortured and the jaded.
For me, this is time spent with my two oldest and dearest friends. Anything goes. Total honesty. Unguarded vulnerability. Over-indulgent fast food orders. Comfortable silences. Unabashed flatulence. Borderline inappropriate comedy. Externalised internal monologues. This song feels like that. Or, more pertinently, this song feels like the embodiment of the fear of someday losing that.
All good things must come to an end, and one of my two pals will soon (probably) be relocating to a city at the opposite end of the country.
But wherever we end up, we’ll always have the memories of the times when we would “just pass the time / saying nothing at all / and laughing at all / the stupid things we do”.
Next time we’re together, I might just stick this tune on.
