Sitting somewhere between the classic Celtic-inspired sound of The Waterboys, the vibe of Belle & Sebastian’s anthem White Collar Boy and the sheer musicality of Thin Lizzy, you’ll find the new debut single from London-based quartet Mr Speed.
Not to be confused with Mr. Speed (who, we’re reliably informed – by them – is the world’s greatest Kiss tribute band), this band rose from the ashes of Gag Salon (for the band is made up of exactly the same members).
On their debut tune – which ostensibly is about not doing very much and embracing and owning it – they display cheek, charm, and character in abundance. With a hearty glam rock stomp garnished with acoustic warmth and an almost-twee earnestness, it’s a musical combination that feels unique and striking.
Of their evolution from one band to another, the band says that “not much has been learned, but things have at least been refined.” Not being familiar with their prior incarnation, we can’t speculate on that. What we can confirm, however, is that this one here is a banger.
Recorded with Cecil Bartlett (who has incredible pedigree, having worked with luminaries such as PJ Harvey, Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien and cult-favourite Los Angeles quartet Warpaint) the future looks bright for this four-piece – whatever we’re calling them at any given moment.
