Chewing you up and spitting you out, Mont Loser’s new single “Confessional” takes you on an auditory rollercoaster. Coming from their EP under the same name, out on the 17th of April via Géographie, the track showcases the best of what the band has to offer.
The growling guitars, which kickstart the song, dare you to come closer and are perfectly balanced by the softer vocals, which sort of remind me of Debbie Harry’s from Blondie at times.
“Confessional” undeniably packs a punch. There’s an anger that underscores the whole thing, with a stand-out lyric being “They try and read my mind to try and know what’s in my head,” excellently demonstrating this. Then you have the drums as well, which give weight to the anger. They help to keep the song feeling fresh as they change from the more laid-back style to complete frenzy. They remind me almost of an argument, that whiplash kind of feeling you get. The back and forth from the vocals also ties this idea together, making a song that haunts the room well after it’s finished.
There are loads of ways that the Parisian band could be described: Shoegazy, alternative, Blood Red Shoes-esque, but always uniquely Mont Loser, and I think that’s why I adore them so much. No matter what they create, they’re never trying to copy another act, and ‘Confessional’ proves this in the most exceptional way.
