Midnight Soup Opera is an intriguing shoegaze and lo-fi music project created by the talented musician Joshua Cotrim, who is based in Brasil. Joshua initially submitted his work to our Spotify playlists, and I was so captivated by his song that I felt compelled to showcase it on our blog as well. Opportunities like this don’t arise very often, so I’m especially excited when they do, particularly since it gives me the chance to introduce another artist from Brazil after a significant gap.
I’ve recently immersed myself in literature by Brazilian authors, which has heightened my appreciation for the rich cultural landscape of Brazil. Consequently, I’m always on the lookout for new music that emanates from this vibrant country located on the other side of the planet. This blog post highlights Joshua’s latest single, which was released just this week. He also shares a little insight into the story of the song:
“‘William’ is about a failed friendship between two characters. One of them (the narrator) is trying hard to let go, mourning over all the good times they had, or at least he/she thought they did.”
The song presents a delightful fusion of lo-fi rock combined with subtle elements of shoegaze, creating a captivating auditory experience. It beautifully evokes the essence of the 90s and early 2000s, immersing the listener in a nostalgic atmosphere that is both comforting and engaging. One of the standout features of the track is the warm, fuzzy guitars that resonate throughout; their rich tones and reverb-laden textures enhance the overall soundscape and draw the listener in deeper.
