Sounding a bit like early Death Cab or American Football as it starts out, this tune from Houston four-piece margins is an old one, but new to us.
As it begins, it lulls us into a false sense of security, coming across like an indie rock tune. However, as the song progresses, it quickly takes on a much more emo feel. When the vocals initially come in, we feel like we’re more in early Jimmy Eat World territory (with the female backing vocals adding a touch of Paramore to proceedings) before the voice eventually devolves to throat-shredding screams.
Some of the instrumentation is heavy as fuck – as it leans into an almost post-rock sound, in parts – but it also veers into the classic rock guitar arena in the second half of the song with the lead tone reminding us of Slash or someone similar that we can’t quite put our finger on. There are moments when it feels almost post-punky in its sparse arrangement. You can tell that a lot of agonising consideration has gone into the composition.
Seasonal Depression’s lyrics are anxious, pensive, and introspective (“The winters over and gone / and now the spring time has come / and so I ask my therapist / does it get any better than this?”) and they’re also overtly personal, but, at the same time, extremely relatable.
