London-based quartet Mannequin Flowers’ new single “White Silver” is an interesting mix of pop melodies, dreamgaze instrumentation and vocals that make you want to sing along. In the words of the band’s frontwoman Isadora, “The song is about that voice in your head that you can’t quite live without.”
And it’s true. Atmospherically, the song takes you to a very specific world, one which is cold, wintery, and white. Chilly night air permeates the track, and the mind and body of the singer blur together, making the song more than just a description of a place. It embodies the visceral feeling of something holding you in, coating you and seeping through your cells.
“Tell me why you and I can’t die / tell me why you and I can’t die”
Despite the themes of the song being more existential, introspective, and a little dark, it manages to be a really great pop song, something to put on repeat and have stuck in your head or get you in your feels. The instrumental bridge in the second half of the song creates the platform for the song to build up to a cathartic place and – eventually – let you land back softly. “White Silver” is out now and it has a beautifully haunting music video to go with it that you can watch below or on Mannequin Flowers’ YouTube channel.
