Catchy and compelling, the new tune from this Aussie duo pulls no punches. The artistic handiwork of Trudy Bennett and Jarrin Borg, What It Means To Me is a fine balance of energetic bluster, tense anxiety, and delicate whimsy that results in a tune that feels like it’s actually alive.
The timeless loud-quiet-loud dynamics best utilised by bands like Nirvana and Pixies work wonders here, and the carefully considered amount of (and indeed choice of) guitar effects brings to mind the sound of early Radiohead.
As well as this retro-leaning, alt-rock/grunge-indebted vibe, there’s also a more modern, gentle, melancholic undertone that recalls the work of acts like Wednesday, as well as an unmistakable sheen that reminds us of established pop acts like Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish, as well as up-and-comers like the wonderful Libby Ember.
Lyrically, it’s a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. We’re told “the song captures the moment someone stops chasing validation and finally walks away from a relationship defined by neglect and emotional distance. Equal parts cathartic and melancholic, it’s an anthem of quiet resilience and hard-won self-worth.” Definitely a tale worth telling, we’d say.
The band says that their sound is “rooted in psychedelic pop with flavours of dream pop, synth pop and space rock” and we can absolutely taste those flavours here. But there’s much more than that at play, too. This is a unique blend; a smorgasbord of stylistic influences that has churned out something delectable and delicious, and it’s not hard to see why they have amassed tens of thousands of listeners across various streaming platforms.
