Before I Go is a tender acoustic ballad. Country-tinged and Celtic-influenced, with delicious, honeyed vibrato vocals, it’s a smokey, syrupy, sultry stunner of a song.
The electric guitar tone evokes a bit of The Beatles’ sound during their Rubber Soul/Revolver periods, while the acoustic guitar remains steadily strummed throughout. There’s also a rather subtle organ in the background that adds more to the song than you realise on first listen.
The nostalgic 1970s feel reminds us of classic Rumours-era Fleetwood Mac and a hint of The Beach Boys – perhaps that’s due to the harmonies? – but also more modern acts like Karen Elson, Beth Gibbons, and Jenny Lewis at her most sincere and subdued. But the sound is also remarkably “her”. As Joe Watson of Stereolab puts it: “Lisa has a real distinctive style and these new songs really bring this out!”
We look forward to seeing what comes next!
