Ligeia, led by musician Melanie Giselle, is a Manhattan-based band that blends aspects of grunge & jazz to create something melodic and explosive. Spit is the first single from their upcoming debut album.
From the first bar, Spit has a fantastically raw sound – there’s a real crunch and grittiness to it that I love.
Classic power chords ground the track with a simple progression that feels like it’s from another era. Tension-building drum rolls and rising guitar riffs explode into some satisfyingly heavy sections – the combination works really well. The guitars growl and cut through like chainsaws.
Melodically, there’s a lot to get your teeth into – hook after hook, twists and turns – the guitars & vocals battling for dominance. Sudden changes in mood mean you’re kept off-balance and can never quite settle.
You can hear the grunge & jazz influences in Melanie’s vocal, which seems to go through a couple of incarnations as the song progresses, but there is always a strong sense of melody, and a pure tone throughout.
Lyrics give way to some melodic chants, and we can just sit back and enjoy the throwback grungy sound in full.
This is a cool, inventive track which has its own, well-defined sound. I would highly recommend listening to it at least a few times to fully digest the breadth and scope of it all!
Spit is out now, and Ligeia’s debut album will be released on October 10th.
