Another excellent new Libby Ember tune! “I’ll Stand in the Doorway” sees the young Canadian songwriter sounding more like herself than she ever has.
There are still echoes of her influences here, but with every step she takes on her creative journey, her sound is becoming more defined. Like an image in a viewfinder coming into focus, we’re watching Ms. Ember evolve before our eyes.
“I’ll Stand in the Doorway” is a heart-wrenching lament about what feels like unrequited love, or more specifically, love that has died. She explains it’s “inspired by a real experience following a breakup. It reflects the strange emotional state of navigating a shared neighbourhood with an ex.”.
Much like her last single “News At The Party”, “I’ll Stand in the Doorway” is about learning how to live with the after-effects of heartbreak. The sentiment in the chorus is particularly strong; the line “Just for a minute / I wanna be / the girl you said you’d be with / for all eternity” stands out in particular.
Musically, this track feels fuller and a little braver than some of her previous work, which we would suggest is another sign of her musical evolution. We would tell you that the future looks bright for her. But chances are you already know that.
