Last Disaster is a South Florida emo and pop punk band that first began putting out new music in 2020 with their debut EP “College Try”. While their songs were familiar and comfortable with traditional upbeat emo and pop punk arrangements, they decided to do something different, starting with “In My Dreams.”
The song is their first fully acoustic original track. It’s just lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist Jared Cove. The song is about heartbreak and a breakup, and the solo arrangement feels perfectly fitting for the subject. Also, in a refreshing change in the genre of breakup songs, “In My Dreams” deals with the fact that the breakup accepts the reality that the breakup was the protagonist’s fault. It questions why they pushed their former partner away, and how much they miss them. They dwell on their own mistakes, and the song ends, somewhat somberly, with the line “dream girl, I miss you”.
I think this makes the song infinitely more relatable. There are countless songs where people wonder what they did wrong, and lack introspection, or where they blame someone else. It’s really good to hear an acoustic emo song about acknowledging that the problems in the relationship were of your own creation, and still dealing with the reality that you miss the person.
Since this track was released in November, Last Disaster has re-released more of their original songs as acoustic versions, as they continue to experiment and play with their sound and shape the band’s identity. It’ll be interesting to hear where they go from here.
