Laplander is an “indietronica” solo project from the Netherlands that blends elements of indie and electronic music into a sound that feels atmospheric and introspective but also danceable. His music features sound reminiscent of indie rock, lo-fi, synth-pop, and post-punk with his own unique style.
His single “Oh Baby Please” is a perfect example of these sounds and feelings. As soon as the song started, I immediately felt drawn in by the droning low synth mixed with the melancholic and minimalistic drum machine beat and melody. After about 10 seconds, the song switches up to feature a brighter and more calming lo-fi instrumental while maintaining a sort of dream-like melancholy introduced at the start of the song. Soon after, the vocals come in with a baritone vocal style that sounds calm and soothing yet sad at the same time.
This leads to my favorite aspect of the track, which is the vocal harmonies. Around the 1-minute mark, the song introduces a second vocalist, leading to harmonies that sound haunting and dreamlike. Overall, the song and its lyrics create a sort of nostalgic, romantic, and safe feeling but with a sense that this safety is fragile. The lyrics of the outro “Oh baby I know what you’re doing” imply that the songwriter is starting to understand that things are drifting apart. The dream-like sound leads me to imagine that the writer is reaching out to his lover as she moves away and the dream starts to fade into awakeness and as the track ends, you are forced to confront reality.
